Spain occupies a predominant place as the world’s leading producer and exporter. Its great diversity of olive varieties gives rise to a range of olive oils unique in the world and of the highest quality. In Spain, more than 200 varieties of olives are grown, each one of them provides unique flavors and aromas. One out of every two bottles of olive oil in the world is from oil produced in Spain, since on an annual average it sells abroad between 850,000 tons and 1.1 million tons, depending on the volume of production. In other words, Spain exports more than 60% of the olive oil grown.
There are more than 180 countries around the world that receive Spanish olive oil exports, both in bulk and bottled, with Italy standing out (which buys 30% of Spain’s production), followed by the United States, Portugal, United Kingdom, Japan and France. Other countries to which Spain exports its olive oils are China, Australia, Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, Mexico, Belgium, South Korea and Russia.
