What is organic food?
It is the broadest definition of all. It refers to a food whose process has been free of pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, additives or preservatives, and all its growth stages have occurred as in nature, without artificial intervention. In addition, they cannot have more than 5% of ingredients from Genetically Manipulated Organisms (GMO), according to current legislation.
In the case of vegetables and fruits, it implies, among other things, that the seed is organic, that the fertilizers are made with compost or substances of organic origin, that no chemical pesticides have been used in their cultivation, and that they have opted for natural methods. It also admits natural pesticides that are made in a homemade way from repellent plants and certain phytogramaceutical products.
In the case of organic farming, they eat organic food and are not given growth hormones or antibiotics. Its advantages are that, in addition to the fact that these products are generally healthier because they do not contain substances that are not beneficial for our body (the final product is free of transgenics, pesticides or other artificial additives), the methods used for their care are more respectful of the flora and fauna, they control the emission of gases and favor biodiversity, On the other hand, their production is more expensive and the methods of cultivation or care of animals are slower and less efficient .
What is a ‘Bio’ or biological food?
It means that none of its components have been genetically altered and, therefore, it is not a transgenic product. Genetic modifications are not uncommon in products such as corn, certain cereals or fruits in order to modify some properties, make them more resistant or modify their appearance or taste. Bio products, in the same way as ecological or organic ones, share the uniqueness of not having been artificially produced or having used chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers during any of their stages. Bio products in particular, the difference lies in the fact that they are foods that did not undergo any modification during their production process, as for example happens with some fruits or vegetables from the traditional market to which they add chemicals to improve their texture, color or scent.
What is an organic food?
